A true winter city, Erzurum enchants visitors with its natural beauty. The city promises inimitable vistas with the longest ski runs in Turkey, the arresting Tortum Falls and the Çoruh River where the World Rafting Championships are held.
Receiving its name from ‘erzeni-Rum’ (Rum center), Erzurum has hosted many civilizations throughout history including the Urartu, Scythians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks, Mongolians and the Ilkhanate. The city became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1514, and it is the only large high-altitude city in Anatolia at 1,959 meters above sea level.

Erzurum appeals to antiquity enthusiasts with well-preserved Seljuk and Ottoman buildings. The city is distinguished for its Ottoman architecture including the Twin Minaret Madrassa, which is named after its two intricately carved minarets; and the equally fascinating Yakudiye Madrassa, which is famous for its peculiar architecture and historic fort.
The Covered Bazaar in the city center is especially renowned for a seemingly endless variety of jewelry and decorative objects made out of world-famous ‘Oltu’ stone (black amber).

One of the fastest flowing rivers in Turkey, the Çoruh hosted the World Rafting Championship in 1993. If rafting is too much adrenaline, the natural beauty is still well-worth the visit.
